A suburban Seattle mom has been charged with assault for running onto a basketball court during her sixth grader’s game, and choking a player who clashed with her daughter.
Monique Altheimer, 38, of Kent, reportedly strangled the 11-year-old girl who complained of ‘everything going dark’ and repeatedly elbowed another 11-year-old girl who tried to rescue her teammate.
Altheimer only released her choke-hold when the mom of the victim ran over and knocked her to the floor.
A suburban Seattle mom has been charged with assault for running onto a basketball court during her sixth grader’s game at Seattle’s St. Therese Catholic Academy (pictured), and choking a player who clashed with her daughter
All hell broke loose at that and the ‘referee, coaches, and several parents ran onto the court in an attempt to break up and/or continue the fighting,’ charging papers say, according to the Seattle Times.
‘Some parents were able to shuffle the children outside of the gym to a safe environment.’
The young victim was left with scratches and red marks, and suffered dizziness, a raspy voice and a sore throat after the December attack.
The incident occurred during a girls’ basketball game at Seattle’s St. Therese Catholic Academy, in Madrona, who was hosting Des Moines’ St. Philomena Catholic School on December 10 last year.
Both teams complained that it was a particularly aggressive game with ‘a good deal of pushing and shoving, even off the ball,’ according to charging papers.
By the third quarter, the referee had spoken to the St. Therese coach about the behavior of a player – Altheimer’s daughter. He said later he considered ending the game but didn’t because he thought the coach would bench her.
But the coach let her play and a minute later she got into a fight with the victim.
‘Each child ‘bucked up’ to the other,’ a detective wrote in charging papers. ‘The two had apparent run-ins during the course of play throughout the game … (and the 11-year-old) was tired of it.’
Altheimer’s daughter punched the St. Philomena player, who punched her back, police say.
That’s when Altheimer ran onto the court, grabbed the St. Philomena player by the throat and began shouting obscenities and threatened: ‘Don’t touch my daughter ever again’.
Altheimer was charged with felony assault via a mailed summons. The 38-year-old has been previously convicted of assault.
She is due in King County Courthouse in Seattle on August 2.
Altheimer declined to comment when reached by phone on Wednesday.
