Baby Saybie was born at 23 weeks and weighed only 8.6 ounces at birth.
The “micro-preemie” was only given an hour to live.
Five months later, the little girl who was born weighing about the size of a large apple is going home with her family this month, reports Fox 5.

The infant’s mother said in a video released by Sharp Mary Birch Hospital:

“They told my husband that we had about an hour with her and that she was going to pass away. But that hour turned into two hours, which turned into a day, which turned into a week.”

After the child’s mother experienced severe pregnancy complications, baby Saybie was delivered in December and stayed in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at Sharp Mary Birch for nearly five months.

She was released from the hospital weighing 5.6 pounds.

The girl born in San Diego, California, has now been deemed the smallest surviving baby in the world.

Looking back on the distressing experience Saybie’s mother said:

“It was the scariest day of my life.”

In a news conference Sharp Mary Birch medical officials said:

“Doctors said the preterm birth was necessary after they found that the baby was not gaining weight and her mother’s life was at immediate risk.”

NPR reports, the child overcame the odds and survived in the hospital’s neonatal intensive care unit because of “luck” and the right mix of genetics.

Nurse Kim Norby, who works at the hospital said:

“She’s a miracle. That’s for sure.”

Her survival is attributed to the fact she never had any serious complications after she was born.
